Web site: http://www.mecheng.osu.edu/vibrations/Prof. Parker's research addresses problems on the dynamics, vibration, and stability of mechanical systems with particular focus on high-speed machinery. This class of systems demonstrates unique dynamic phenomena. One project investigates the dynamics of planetary gears and other multi-mesh gear systems with application to helicopter and automotive transmissions. In addition to analytical research, this project uses specialized computational modeling of the gear tooth contact mechanics. Prof. Parker also actively researches the vibration of serpentine belt drives in cars where engine excitations drive belt instabilities and nonlinear response. A third project examines the dynamics of spinning, elastic disk-spindle systems such as in disk drives and turbomachinery. A novel analytical formulation allows classical dynamic stability analysis of such systems.
Prof. Parker is a Fellow of ASME and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2005, he was awarded ASME's Gustus Larson award for outstanding engineering accomplishment. He received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 1999. Presented at a White House ceremony, this is "the highest honor awarded by the U.S. government to scientists and engineers beginning their research careers." This builds on the U.S. Army Young Investigator Research Award that Prof. Parker received in 1998 for his planetary gear dynamics research. In 1999, Prof. Parker was awarded the National Science Foundation CAREER Award for his research on spinning disk-spindle systems and high-speed belt drives.
Ford Motor Company honored Prof. Parker with their 2007 Chief Engineer Award for his role in solving a major gear noise problem. He also received the Dow Outstanding New Faculty Member Award from the American Society of Engineering Education, the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, the Ohio State Lumley Research Award (twice), and the Ohio State Research Accomplishment Award (twice). Prof. Parker received the Cummins Engine Company Scholarship to attend the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Sympoisum. and was an invitee to the international National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Symposia held jointly with Japan and Germany.
Prof. Parker has held visiting appointments at INSA Lyon in France (2006), Risoe National Lab in Denmark (2005), the University of Technology, Sydney (2005), and NASA Glenn Research Center (1996). He has consulted for numerous companies internationally on gear vibration and noise.
Prof. Parker's work is supported by the NSF, U.S. Army Research Office, NASA, National Rotorcraft Technology Center, General Motors, Ford, Boeing, Honeywell, Mark IV Automotive, U.S. Department of Transportation, Ohio Space Grant Consortium, and Komatsu. He has received fellowships from NSF, U. S. Army, NASA, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Australian Research Council.
