Research
Dr. Mendelsohn's research activities are in the areas of fracture mechanics, surface and contact mechanics, and wave propagation in cracked structures. He is particularly interested in computationally modeling material or structural systems which exhibit heterogeneity effects in the mechanics of their deformation, damage and fracture. This involves modeling mechanical interaction across opposing irregular surfaces of flaws and cracks, and across internal interfaces between constituents in damaged heterogeneous materials subjected to realistic multi-axial load histories. Dr. Mendelsohn's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. He has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics and a member and chair of the Elasticity Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
