ME 888 Mechanical Engineering Seminars Objective:
To broaden the background and knowledge of ME graduate students by exposing them to a wide range of contemporary research topics in the diverse field of Mechanical Engineering. Course requirements for ME 888 as well as the speakers for the current quarter listed below. If you click on the title of a seminar, then you will be taken to a page where you can see the information about the person speaking individual's abstract for the seminar.
ME 888 Requirements:
1. All full time ME graduate students are required to register for ME 888 and to attend the seminars every quarter (except Summer quarter). Only Ph.D. students who have passed their Candidacy exam are exempted.
2. The students registered for ME 888 are required to attend a minimum of four seminars per quarter. Up to two of these could be informal seminars, which are defined as technical presentations either in (a) the Department of Mechanical Engineering scheduled for other than ME 888, or (b) the College of Engineering. Students should consult their advisors on these informal seminars.
3. Students with time conflicts with other courses are required to register for the “ARR” Section, ME 888R. These students are required to attend a minimum of four informal seminars in consultation with their advisors.
4. Presentations attended in a conference or seminars by other students cannot count towards the course requirement.
5. A blank ME 888 Report is provided at the bottom, in both Microsoft Word and PDF format, for students to list (a) the dates, (b) the names of the speakers, and (c) the titles of the presentations. Every registered student (in ME 888 and ME 888R alike) is required to fill out and e-mail this report specifically to me888@mecheng.ohio-state.edu with the “ME 888 Report” typed in the “Subject” line by 5:00 pm on the day of the last scheduled ME 888 seminar for that quarter. Only e-mailed reports will be accepted, and not the hard copies. Failure to submit the report by e-mail on time will result in an “Unsatisfactory” grade. In an effort to improve the attractiveness of these seminars to the audience, each student is also asked to rank the attended seminars over a scale of 1 to 10: 1 being “not useful” and 10 being “excellent.” Such rankings will be helpful in extending invitations to future seminar speakers.
6. The report must have the advisor’s signature only (1) for ME 888R students, or (2) if any informal seminar is listed for ME 888 students. Such a report should be scanned and e-mailed also to me888@mecheng.ohio-state.edu.
7. A staff member from the ME department will distribute an Attendance Record for students to sign during each seminar. In case the attendance record is not circulated at the beginning of the seminar, the faculty host should be reminded.
